Basic Life Support (BLS)Purpose The purpose of the Basic Life Support course (BLS) is to provide the participants with the knowledge, skills, attitude, and ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, administer CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.
Audience The BLS course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR and other lifesaving skills in- and out-of-hospital settings – this includes emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and qualified bystanders.
Goal By the end of the course the participant knows:
- Causes for cardiac arrest
- How to operate an external automated defibrillator (AED)
- How to administer CPR to a non-breathing unconscious patient with an external automated defibrillator (AED) available
- How to relieve choking
In addition the participant has understanding of:
- Safety rules pertaining to use of an external automated defibrillator
- Indications for use of an external automated defibrillator
- Situations which may require special attention before use of an external automated defibrillator

- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) using an external automated defibrillator (AED)
- Irregular heartbeat
- Heart attack
- Contents of an external automated defibrillator (AED)
- Safety precautions for use of an external automated defibrillator (AED)
- Indications and contraindications for use of an external automated defibrillator (AED)
- Operating an external automated defibrillator (AED)
- Internal instructions in case of serious illnesses/injuries
